What Gets Checked
Pennsylvania's safety inspection covers brakes, tires and wheels, steering and suspension, lights and electrical, glass, mirrors, wipers and washers, the defroster, horn, exhaust, fuel system, speedometer, odometer, body and chassis. In Bucks County, most cars also need an emissions test: for 1996 and newer cars, a scan of the onboard computer and a gas cap test.
Work Trucks and Heavier Vehicles
Gasoline vehicles from 8,501 to 9,000 lb get a different emissions test, a two-speed idle test with a visual and gas cap check, and vehicles over 9,000 lb are exempt from emissions altogether. Bring in what you drive, car, pickup or van, and we'll tell you which test applies.
